A Progressive Art Workshop was held with patients of the Westminster Free Free clinic that wanted to explore their health issues with a focus on their personal journey to healing. Patients were invited to share the tools they have acquired for coping with their challenges in positive ways. Their tools included everything from lifestyle changes, treatment options to spiritual care. The art workshops gave the patients an opportunity to share their frustrations and successes with their family and peers through their art.

Westminster Free Clinic - Expressive Art Workshops
PAINTING • PHOTOGRAPHY • MIXED MEDIA • GRAPHIC DESIGN • CREATIVE DIRECTION
People Helping People was a two day Expressive Art Workshop held at the Westminster FREE Clinic in Thousand Oaks, CA. The clinic serves low-income and uninsured residents of Ventura County. Over 300 healthcare professionals and 80 local high school interns provide free bilingual services to over 7,000 individuals annually! The clinic's services include primary care, mental health counseling, diagnostics, case management, specialty referrals, diabetes management and education, vision tests and free eye glasses.
We asked the patients to illustrate their healthcare challenges and the tools they have learned at the clinic to heal themselves. The patients were eager to documents their successes (most focusing on diet and exercise) and how they manage their medical challenges. The enthusiastic responses are a testimony to how creative expression can inform, engage, educate and heal. The patients loved the experience, and it was a testament to the effectiveness of the clinic's work.
